Total Communication is a communication approach that emphasizes the use of multiple modes of communication, including both sign language and spoken language. This approach allows individuals to utilize the advantages of both modalities, making communication more accessible and effective for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing and their hearing counterparts.

By incorporating verbal speech and signing, Total Communication aims to facilitate understanding in diverse situations and promotes more inclusive interaction. This strategy recognizes that different individuals may have varying preferences and abilities when it comes to communication, and thus, the combination of both sign and spoken language provides a comprehensive means to convey messages.

Simultaneous Communication also involves using sign language while speaking, but it specifically refers to the simultaneous use of both modes, which may not always be as flexible as Total Communication. Sign Communication focuses solely on signed languages, and Spoken Communication relies exclusively on spoken languages, disregarding the other modality. In contrast, Total Communication encompasses a broader approach by supporting a range of communication methods to best suit individual needs.
